Dawn: the settings were as follows:
f/5
1/250
ISO 1600
Normally I would not have had my ISO so high, but I had forgotten to change it from shooting pictures indoors before that (without a flash). I guess, though, for how dark it was it would be better to have the ISO as high as possible (which on my camera is 1600 I think). Anyway, I would also have taken a bunch of different shots with different settings, but it was super cold that morning and I had just stepped out to let my dog out and he didn't want to stay out long! Neither did I! So I only gave it two tries and that was it! (Except for one that I took an hour or so earlier, which is a completely different picture-sky completely dark and the moon brighter).
Cheryl...as soon as you are very comfortable with manual you will capture these shots as well. I'm NOT that comfortable with manual, honestly, but I can usually get somewhat of a shot. I took another shot about 20 minutes before this one and just got the moon...no trees because the sky was still too dark. I'll send it to you if you'd like. You can see the difference. I also use my zoom lens which helps alot. And, if it's really dark, you'll need a tripod.
Indeed you were up early...we didn't roll out of bed until 9:30...ahhh, sweet sleep! BUT, capturing early morning shots....priceless! Well done Rhonda!

this is where it would be nice to have some more lenses. Neat shot! So your aperture wide open and shutter speed very slow?
